"Tenting on the Old Campground"

from Tenting Tonight by Ray Gehring

/

about

Dedicated to the great pianist Bill Carrothers, "Tenting on the Old Campground" is a song from the Civil War era written by Walter Kittredge in 1863. It was a particular favorite of enlisted men in the Union army.

It's a beautiful melody which strikingly contrasts with the conditions of soldiers on the battlefield. It is a testament to the importance of music and the role it played to lift spirits during that time in our nation's history.

"Many are the hearts that are weary tonight,
Wishing for the war to cease;
Many are the hearts looking for the right
To see the dawn of peace.
Tenting tonight, tenting tonight,
Tenting on the old campground.”
