"Who Can I Turn To?"

from Tenting Tonight by Ray Gehring

/

about

"Who Can I Turn To?", written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley in 1964, was first introduced in the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd.

The melody is a favorite of mine to play, for many reasons. However, it was the lyrics of this song that informed how this song was going to be arranged and performed. They portray the intense emotions and psyche of someone wandering around lost, isolated in the world, and desperately hoping for a better tomorrow.

At the time, it was addressing the perpetuation of the status quo between the upper and lower classes of British society in the 1960s”. The lyrics are especially prescient today given the status quo is now exponentially worse than the time in which it was written.
